Cross-Border Data Protection Network

Visiting Programme

Cross-DPN will organise an annual open call to support short research visits to academic institutions in the UK and RoI (DCU, Portsmouth) by two outstanding emerging scholars whose research seeks to contribute to a better understanding of data protection-related challenges post-Brexit.

Given the ongoing nature of the current pandemic, the 2021 visiting programme will not involve travel and will be fully online. Visitors will actively participate in all Cross-DPN events remotely.

Call For Applications

CROSS-DPN (UK-Irish Cross-Border Data Protection Network) opens a call for applications by outstanding early career researchers for two virtual ‘Research Visits’: one by a UK-based scholar to the School of Law & Government of Dublin City University and one by a RoI-based scholar to the Law School of University of Portsmouth respectively. The duration of the virtual Research Visits will be between July and December 2021.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants are early career researchers (including excellent doctoral candidates and post-doc researchers), who are based on an academic institution in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland and whose current research falls within the scope of one or more of the CROSS-DPN’s themes:
  • Commercial data transfer between UK and EU and the adequacy decision
  • Cross-border Research and Collaboration Following Brexit
  • Data protection, law enforcement and intelligence sharing
  • Transnational institutional collaboration in the field of data protection post-Brexit.

What will the Virtual Research Visit entail?

Successful applicants will be invited to write and present a paper at one of the four CROSS-DPN’s events and contribute to the planned research outputs, including edited book collections, journal special issues and scientific blogs (See events). They will also join our network of expert scholars in the field of data protection and be given the opportunity to present their ongoing research to peers at seminars organised at DCU and the University of Portsmouth.
Given the ongoing COVID-19-related restrictions, the Research Visits are currently planned to be undertaken virtually in their entirety. This means that, as the situation stands, CROSS-DPN will not be able to offer financial support for travel and accommodation expenses. This may change depending on the rules that may apply in the future and the availability of the successful applicants.

How to apply?

Applications for this position can be made by forwarding a research abstract of max 500 words and CV via email at In the research abstract, please describe the scope of the paper you wish to write during your visiting period. The paper should clearly contribute to one of the four CROSS-DPN themes (see above).
The deadline for the application is Friday 11th June 2021. Late applications will not be considered.
